Attachment 1 - MEEHA Annual Meeting of Nov. 7, 2009

Battalion Chief Mike Boehm of Summit Fire Department gave a presentation to the MEEHA Board members about the Summit Fire Department, which has merged with our Fort Valley Fire Department. The following is a summary of his presentation.

History______________________________________________________

Summit Fire Department was originally created to serve Doney Park and Timberline. Fort Valley Fire Department approached Summit about merging because of common concerns about the districts they served: The existence of a Fire Board, areas that are one-way-in, one-way out, and a lack of water supply. The two districts merged and we now have 2 stations on our side, with at least one paramedic per district 24/7, with the best situation including one paramedic at each station. He also mentioned that a homeowner may be a free property assessment concerning tree thinning.

Apparatus____________________________________________________ The fire district has three types of fire engines: Type 1, for structure fires, EMS, and wildland fires; Type 6, which is a truck; Type 3, which is a water tender.

Mutual Agreement with Flagstaff_________________________________ The Summit Fire District maintains a mutual agreement with the city of Flagstaff.

Response Times_______________________________________________ The response time to a 911 call depends on several conditions:

	1. Weather
	2. Are they at the station at time of call

The goal is a response time of 4-6 minutes. Everyone is rotated through stations to become familiar with every area in the fire district. They maintain accurate map books.

District Size___________________________________________________ The fire district has a perimeter of 100 square miles.

Burn Permits__________________________________________________ A burn permit can be obtained at any fire station. The permit is good as long as the owner lives at that location. Everyone is reminded to call the local fire station to let them know that you intend to burn - there may be a ban on burns on any particular day because of wind and other conditions. The burn times are usually between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., depending upon the weather.

Signage_______________________________________________________ Free house numbers and placards are available at the fire stations. The ideal locations for house numbers are one a 4x4 post at the driveway entrance, and also on the house.

Newsletter____________________________________________________ The fire district's newsletter, the Summit Siren, should be received by all homeowners. If a homeowner does not received the newsletter, he/she may call Station 32, at 526-9537, to receive the newsletter.

Wing Mountain Snow Play Area_________________________________ The snow play area will be operational again this year. In previous years the district was responding to calls at the play area without compensation, and the concessionaires won't pay anything. Last year the district did not respond, and the same will be true this coming year.
